Science on Hand

This term we are learning about science and how conduct a fair test.
Last week we participated in a school visit from Hands On Science. We did a couple of experiment based on fabrics and materials.
My favourite experiment was the experiment where we whatched to see which material is the most fire resistant.
Here is the science report for what we did:

AIM: to see which fabric is the most fire resistant.

Hypothesis: I hypothesise that Nomex will be the most fire resistant because fire fighters wear Nomex while fighting fires.

Variables:

Change: the fabric

Measure: which material is the most fire resistant

Same: the size of material, lighted at the bottom and all with matches.

Materials:

  • wool
  • Nomex
  • Nylon
  • plastic
  • Dry-fit
  • cotton
  • matches
  • clips
  • tray

Method:

  1. set alight the wool, counting how long it takes for it to burn
  2. repeat this step for all other materials
  3. compare how much material is left

My experiment

Which material do you hypothesise would burn the fastest and why?

  1. Hi Esther,
I hypothesise that the plastic will burn the fastest because my mum said ” don’t put plastic near a fire,” which I’m assuming it will melt. Why do you think the flamability test was the most fun?
    Bye, Lucas

  2. Hi Esther
I hypothesise that the nylon would burn fastest because it is very thin and synthic fabrics often have a tag reading ‘Keep away from fire.’ Which material burnt the fastest?
